Ingredients
- 1 block of tofu, ideally extra firm or firm
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup of Worcestershire sauce (or your favorite sauce)
- 2 tbsp water
- 3 cloves of garlic, crushed (optional)
- 1 tsp grated ginger or ginger powder
- 2 tsp corn starch (add more if necessary)
- Pinch of salt, to taste
- Sesame seeds, to top
Instructions
DIRECTIONS
- Drain the tofu, pat it dry and cut it into cubes. Drizzle Olive oil on raw tofu pieces (sliced into cubes if preferred) and gently toss pieces in a bowl with the salt, garlic powder, pepper and corn starch until evenly coated. Add more corn starch if necessary.
- Heat a large skillet on medium heat. Once hot, add in the oil and let it heat for 30 seconds.
- Fry Tofu: Add your tofu into the pan and cook on medium heat for about 20-25 minutes, rotating the pieces every 5 minutes.
**(Bake Tofu: Alternatively, you can bake the tofu in the oven for 40 minutes on 375 F, flipping halfway through.) - Once the tofu is browned, remove it from the pan/oven and set it aside while you prepare your sauce.
- Sauce Mix: Add the 1/2 cup of water, garlic, Soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, ginger and salt mix to the same pan and keep stirring until sauce has a less watery consistency.
- Add the tofu back into the pan, and coat evenly with sauce mix.
- Top with sesame seeds, serve and enjoy!
Notes
For a crunchy, crispy texture, start by thoroughly draining any excess liquid from the tofu packaging and make sure it's completely dry. While you can press it for an extra 20-30 minutes to remove even more moisture, a good pat usually does the trick. Next, coat the tofu in a flour like tapioca or cornstarch. This not only gives it a nice golden color but also adds an extra layer of crunch. Finally, when it's time to cook, you have two great options: you can either pan-fry it or bake it in the oven. This way, you'll get deliciously crispy tofu every time!
